Asphalt Paving in Tyro, NC

Tyro is an unincorporated community in western Davidson County, on NC 150. If a driveway is a longer approach off the highway, drainage is checked before a new surface goes down.

The NC 150 corridor

Tyro sits along North Carolina Highway 150. Reeds is up the highway to the northeast, Churchland is to the southwest, Linwood is to the southeast, and Lexington is to the east. It is a rural census-designated place. West Davidson High School and Tyro Middle School are here.

If the drive is long

The soil here is Piedmont clay. If the drive is long, that clay has more room to hold water. Where an approach washes in the wheel paths, the first check is crown and drainage, not another load of stone. Where the owner wants asphalt, the clay comes out of the pavement section, a compacted stone base goes in, and the grade is set so storms leave the surface. Freeze-thaw is the same water problem in cold weather: moisture left in the base expands, and the surface heaves or cracks. A freezing week is a bad time to pave. Crack filling and gravel regrading have a wider season.

Where the drive meets NC 150

An apron onto NC 150 is a state-road question. NCDOT's Policy on Street and Driveway Access says a permit will normally not be required for a single residence, and it still tells the owner to contact the District Engineer about safety, design, and driveway pipe before building in the right-of-way. A commercial entrance or a change in how the property uses the highway is a different case. The estimate is where we look at the grade, the pipe, and the road the driveway actually meets. Call and ask for that visit.

Common questions in Tyro

Do you serve Tyro?

Yes. Tyro is in Davidson County, on NC 150. Estimates are free. Call (980) 866-7634 and we'll set a time.

Gravel or asphalt for a drive off NC 150?

Both can work. Gravel costs less up front and wants the crown kept up. Asphalt costs more and lasts with sealcoating if the stone base under it was built right. A sound gravel base is also the start of paving later.

Who handles the apron at the highway?

If the road is on the state system, NCDOT's driveway-access policy is the document. A single residence is normally not a permit case, and the owner should still talk to the District Engineer. Call for a free estimate and we can look at the apron with you.
