Asphalt Paving in Southmont, NC
Southmont is an unincorporated community in southern Davidson County, on North Carolina Highway 8 along the north shore of High Rock Lake. On a lot that slopes toward the water, the estimate starts with where the rain goes.
When a lot slopes toward the water
If a driveway on this shore runs downhill from the road or up from a lower pad, rain will try to follow that slope. A flat crown lets water run down the driving surface, strip gravel, and soften the clay under an asphalt edge. On that property the work starts with drainage: shape the surface so water leaves to the sides, keep ditches and culvert crossings open, and only then decide whether the right surface is gravel, a repaired asphalt pad, or a new paved drive.
What to check on a sloped lot
The soil here is Piedmont clay. On a sloped lot, we check whether that clay is still in the pavement section, whether the grade sends water off the driving surface, and whether runoff points at the house or a neighbor's yard. Paving over clay that is still holding water is how edges crumble and patches come back. Excavation to a sound subgrade, a compacted stone base, and a grade that moves water away are the parts that decide whether the surface lasts. Sealcoating comes later, after new asphalt has had time to cure. It does not fix a base that is already moving, and freeze-thaw will open any water left in that base.
Davidson County, on the lake road
Driveway Pros serves Southmont in Davidson County, and the estimate is free. We check the slope and the culvert on site. If the apron ties into NC 8 and that road is on the state system, the apron question goes to NCDOT's Policy on Street and Driveway Access. A single residence is normally not a permit case under that policy, and the owner is still encouraged to contact the District Engineer before work in the right-of-way. Call for a free estimate.

Common questions in Southmont
Do you come to Southmont and High Rock Lake?
Yes. Southmont is in Davidson County, on NC 8 along the north shore of High Rock Lake. Estimates are free. Call (980) 866-7634.
The drive slopes toward the lake and washes out. Can that be fixed?
Usually the fix is drainage, not more stone. Re-establish the crown so water leaves the driving surface, and make sure the ditch or culvert can actually carry it. Then we decide whether gravel or asphalt is the right surface.
Does a driveway onto NC 8 need a permit?
NCDOT's policy says a permit will normally not be required for a single residence. Contact the District Engineer about the specific road, the pipe, and any change in use. Call for a free estimate and we can look at the apron with you.
